Jeremie Frimpong's Celtic rite of passage as Lennoxtown tale sparks Brendan Rodgers flashback

Awestruck Jeremie Frimpong has opened up on his first meeting with Celtic legend Danny McGrain.

The full-back revealed he spotted the Hoops icon eating alone in the Lennoxtown canteen and felt compelled to introduce himself.

He insists the meeting with McGrain was an early confidence booster in his Parkhead career, having since gone on to establish himself as a firm fans' favourite.

Frimpong told the Celtic View : "As soon as I saw Danny - he was sitting in the canteen, eating his food, I just had to go up and introduce myself.

"I just had to! That was my first week at Lennoxtown, and I couldn't miss the opportunity.

"He was sitting there by himself, we had a conversation and he was really nice.

"That's huge for a young player like myself from a confidence point of view."

McGrain is Celtic personified and an introduction to the former full-back appears to be a rite of passage at the club.

Frimpong 's recollection harks back to the Brendan Rodgers tale of how he first encountered McGrain, insisting he had to ensure the 69-year-old he still had a place at the club following his 2016 arrival.

The story went viral after Rodgers recounted it at his autobiography launch in 2017.

Rodgers said: "My PA told me Danny McGrain wanted to see me and I was thinking 'Wow, Danny McGrain!'.

"I got in and everyone was wearing their Celtic kits for training but Danny wasn't.

"So he said to me, 'Hi boss, pleasure to meet you' and I said, 'Danny, the pleasure's mine'.

"Then he said to me, 'I wanted to know if you still want me here.

"I didn't want to get changed until I knew you wanted me here.

"I couldn't believe it. I said 'as long as I'm here, you are."
