Jeremie Frimpong in Bayer Leverkusen rollercoaster as former Celtic kid stars and stutters in Europa League thriller

Former Celtic right-back Jeremie Frimpong had a rollercoaster first start for Bayer Leverkusen as his side came from 3-0 down against Young Boys – only to lose it at the death.

The former Manchester City youth moved to the Bundesliga in January for a fee of £11.5million but has had to wait for his first start for his new club.

Frimpong was finally given his first start by coach Peter Bosz in the Europa League last 32 first leg in Switzerland and it was certainly an eventful night.

Leverkusen found themselves 1-0 down after just three minutes when Christian Fassnacht headed home from a corner.

And 10 minutes later Young Boys doubled their advantage from another set piece, with Theoson Siebatcheu left unmarked to score at the back post.

Frimpong's debut was fast becoming a nightmare and the 20-year-old didn't cover himself in glory as Leverkusen fell 3-0 behind.

His attempted through ball was cut out and the attacking right-back was stranded high up the pitch as the ball was played in behind him.

It was Aleksandar Dragovic who was most culpable though as he failed to cut it out and left Elia Meschack one-on-one to score a third.

It looked like being an embarrassing night for Frimpong and Leverkusen but they stepped it up in the second half.

The former Celtic man showed all of his pace and trickery to get away from Moumi Ngamaleu before picking out Patrik Schick with a perfect cross.

The Czech international's header found the back of the net and Frimpong was again involved as it went to 3-2.

It was he who won the free-kick that saw the ball pumped into the box and after a bit of pinball Schick again nodded home.

And Moussa Diaby turned the tie on its head when he made it 3-3 with 15 minutes to play.

There was a sting in the tail though as Siebatcheu grabbed his second of the match late on when he turned in a rebound off the post to win it 4-3.

Despite the defeat Leverkusen now welcome their Swiss opponents to the BayArena with three away goals in their favour.

And Frimpong will hope to start in the return leg after being a key part of the turnaround.
