Jeremie Frimpong flying ahead of Celtic return as Bayer Leverkusen boss offers praise that may surprise Parkhead fans

Former Celtic full-back Jeremie Frimpong is in flying form ahead of his return to Parkhead - and even winning praise for his defensive work.

The youngster left Parkhead in January to join Bayer Leverkusen, but didn't have to wait long to return.

The Bundesliga side visit Glasgow on Europa League matchday two, with Celtic supporters well aware of what Frimpong can do going forward.

The former Manchester City youth immediately became a fan favourite with his pace and directness down the right flank, but it was acknowledged he was not the finished article.

Many had concerns about Frimpong's defensive capabilities in particular, but that's the very attribute which has been singled out for praise by Bayer boss Gerardo Seoane.

The right-back bagged a lovely assist in the weekend win over Mainz, but it was at the other end of the park that he really earned accolades.

Seoane said: "Jeremie is a player who surpasses himself when he feels trust.

"He is capable of developing incredibly quickly.

"I think that he is very focused and disciplined, especially when it comes to his defensive work.

"There are always things to improve, but he's definitely an asset for us.

"I am happy for him that he got his reward for his 20 or 30 sprints forward and that he had the awareness to play one-two passes with Florian Wirtz in a confined space."
