Jenson Button has said he is unable to comment as yet on reports he is to lose his F1 drive at McLaren come the season’s end.
There have been persistent rumours in the paddock the British former world champion would be replaced by the double world champion Fernando Alonso, who is leaving Ferrari to make way for Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
Button tweeted from Brazil, where the teams are competing in the penultimate round of the world championship: “No news I can share with you guys about my future yet. #Alwaysbettertohearitfromthehorsesmouth”.
He later told Sky Sports News: “I can’t say anything more. Whatever I’m doing next year it’s going to be exciting and it’s going to be a challenge.”
According to the Daily Mail, McLaren have decided to stick with the less-experienced Kevin Magnussen, 22, to partner the Spaniard meaning that Button’s 15-year Formula One career could end with the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi on 23 November.
Button, 34, who won the world title with Brawn in 2009, would then be likely to drop into sports car racing as a means of prolonging his career.
Button’s manager, Richard Goddard, said recently: “Jenson is too good to sit at the back of the grid, so if McLaren haven’t got a seat for him, he would look elsewhere.”
He has already been linked with Porsche who hired Mark Webber when he finished his F1 career with Red Bull.
