Jennifer Saunders to star in West End transfer of Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit

Jennifer Saunders will reprise her role in Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit, which will transfer to the West End next year.

The comedy, which ran at the Theatre Royal Bath in June, will open at the Duke of York’s Theatre in the spring, directed by former National Theatre director Richard Eyre.

Saunders, best known for Absolutely Fabulous and as half of double act French and Saunders with Dawn French, reprises her role as a hapless medium who stages a séance and accidentally summons the spirit of her subject’s late wife.

Original cast members Geoffrey Streatfield, Lisa Dillon, Emma Naomi, Simon Coates, Lucy Robinson and Rose Wardlaw join the transfer, which will have a UK tour before arriving in London.

The production has design by Anthony Ward, lighting by Howard Harrison, sound by John Leonard and illusions by Paul Kieve.

Coward wrote Blithe Spirit in 1941 and the show enjoyed a run in the West End and on Broadway, proving a welcome distraction at the height of World War II.

Blithe Spirit runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre from March 5-April 11, 2020.
