Jennifer Lopez says ‘I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers’ in GQ interview

Jennifer Lopez spoke to GQ about her most famous moments in a new video where she discusses her iconic green Versace dress, starring alongside her then-husband Marc Anthony in 2006’s El Cantante and the differences between her and her Hustlers character. The triple threat was honored as the magazine’s 2019 Icon of the Year.

“I’ve never been motivated by money,” Lopez said, comparing herself to her Hustlers character, Ramona. She’s receiving Oscar buzz for her turn as the New York stripper.

“I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers. I did it for free and produced it. I bank on myself. Like Jenny From the Block—I do what I want, I do what I love,” she said.

“It was kind of a really different mindset to get into to play Ramona,” calling the character, who is based on Samantha Barbash, “unapologetically savage.”

"It became a movement. It wasn’t just a movie. This is our movie, where we run s**t. They know it's all women producers, woman director, woman writer, all women starring in it and they kind of took ownership of that. We've been watching men take advantage of women in movies for a long time, so it was a fun kind of ride to see the tables turned," she explained.

Lopez, 50, talked about walking in Donatella Versace’s most recent show, saying, “We’ve been very close for a long time now."

She also discussed how she originally chose the iconic green dress, which is credited with inventing Google Images. “I didn’t have anything to wear for the Grammys and my stylist showed up with two dresses and the green dress was one of them… The next morning I was on the cover of USA Today and the covers of the papers, I knew this hit a chord with people,” she said. “I don’t see it as provocative, I see it as sensual and sexy and beautiful.”

In the 'Biggest Moments' video interview, the Selena star also spoke about producing and starring alongside her then-husband Marc Anthony in the poorly-reviewed El Cantante (it has 25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), saying, “It’s a very difficult thing for a real life couple to play onscreen and be convincing as the characters.”

She admits, “Honestly, it’s a flawed movie. I don’t think it was a perfect movie. But I do believe that the performances by Marc and myself were something that I’m very proud of to this day.”
