Jennifer Lawrence set to play inventor of Miracle Mop for David O Russell

Jennifer Lawrence is set to reunite with regular collaborator David O Russell for a biopic about the Long Island single mother who invented the Miracle Mop, reports Deadline.

Russell, whose films Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle have seen Lawrence turn in two of the most celebrated performances of her nascent career, is in talks to rewrite and direct the project for 20th Century Fox's Fox 2000 offshoot. The current screenplay is by Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote with Kristen Wiig the hit 2012 comedy Bridesmaids.

Oscar-winner Lawrence would play Joy Mangano, the mother of three who became one of most successful American entrepreneurs with the invention of the self-wringing Miracle Mop. She eventually sold her company, Ingenious Designs, to the Home Shopping Network in a multimillion dollar deal, but stayed on as company president. She is currently one of the channel's most successful presenters and also invented Huggable Hangers.

Lawrence's best actress Oscar in 2013 came for her work in Russell's Silver Linings Playbook; she is nominated this year for best supporting actress in the US film-maker's American Hustle. The fictional retelling of the FBI's famous Abscam sting of the 1970s and 80s has 10 nominations in total and looks set to fight it out with Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave and Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity for the spoils at this year's ceremony. The 2014 Oscars will take place at Dolby theatre in Los Angeles on 2 March.

Russell's Joy Mangano biopic may not be the only project he is planning with Lawrence. Last year the director was reported to have cast his regular muse as a lead in The End of Everything, described as a fact-based love story about a powerful oil tycoon who finds himself penniless after he is caught in an affair.
