Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson are going through it in ‘Die My Love’ trailer

After it made headlines at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, we finally have our first official look at Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love. And just based on this brief teaser trailer, and the performances from stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, the film looks like a doozy.

On Friday, Mubi officially released the first teaser trailer for Die My Love, which Ramsay directed and co-wrote alongside Enda Walsh and Alice Burch, inspired by Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel of the same name. The film, which also stars Sissy Spacek, LaKeith Stanfield, and Nick Nolte, is set to be released in theaters later this fall.

Set to Shirley Ellis’ 1965 hit “The Clapping Song”, the teaser shows Lawrence and Pattinson’s characters dancing and crawling around a rural property… before things quickly turn unsettling. A screaming match ensues, Spacek’s character brandishes a weapon in the dark, Lawrence’s character licks a window, and she dances amid a floor of confetti at a party.

According to the official synopsis, in Die My Love, “a hopeful young and loving couple (Grace and Jackson) move from New York to an inherited house in the country. Grace tries to find her identity with a new baby in the isolated environment. Yet as she begins to unravel, it’s not in weakness but imagination, strength and a stunning untamed vivacity that she discovers herself anew.”

A Different Kind of Substance

Die My Love has had a unique kind of anticipation around it ever since Lawrence and Pattinson were first cast. Their respective pasts as stars of wildly successful young adult franchises in the 2010s (The Hunger Games and Twilight, respectively), as well as Ramsay’s visceral work on projects like We Need to Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here, both bring existing fandoms into the fray. (And to an extent, those fandoms have started to overlap as the target audience of Twilight and The Hunger Games has gotten older.)

Once Mubi picked up the distribution rights at the Cannes Film Festival, that anticipation only grew. The streaming service-turned-distributor surprised the awards circuit last year with the genre-defying body horror The Substance, which earned five Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Demi Moore. After The Substance‘s take on the female experience struck a very specific (and often horrifying) chord with its audience, fans are definitely curious to see the potential in Die My Love‘s take on the themes. There’s no telling if the film will also transcend to accidental meme status with elements like Monstro Elisasue, but it’s safe to assume that we’re in for a wild ride.

Lawrence is an executive producer on Die My Love, alongside Martin Scorsese, Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, Thad Luckinbill, Justine Ciarrocchi, and Andrea Calderwood. The film was reportedly brought to life after Scorsese read Harwicz’s novel in his book club, and was inspired to pitch an adaptation to Lawrence’s production company, Excellent Cadaver, in which she would star.

Die My Love will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, November 7th.
