Jennifer Coolidge’s 'deep depression' was sparked by devastating family tragedy

If you don't immediately recognise Jennifer Coolidge's name, you'd likely still recognise her face, or even her iconic voice.

A stalwart of romcoms and comedies, Jennifer has played hilarious characters that made her the most popular celebrity to be impersonated by Ru Paul's Drag Race hopefuls.

But despite her long TV and film career, not much is known about her.

Jennifer, 60, has been single for most of her life, and if she has had relationships she has kept them a secret from the public.

She is currently winning rave reviews for her appearance in White Lotus, where she plays a rich singleton dealing with the recent death of her mother.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Jennifer opened up a little more about her life, admitting she'd suffered horribly from depression during the lockdown and that she related to her White Lotus character.

She said: "I was really affected by the pandemic. It was an incredibly sad time. I was reading tragic news stories on a daily basis, had a fatalistic approach and assumed the virus was going to win.

"I knew people who lost their lives and was convinced we wouldn’t make it through. I wasn’t thinking about work, because I didn’t think we’d be alive."

She explained that when Mike White, the creator of White Lotus, called her and offered her the role, she almost said no when she found out she would be flying to Hawaii to film immediately.

Jennifer said she had been "gorging and self-destructing" at home, eating pizza all day, and she initially did not want to be filmed unless it was from the neck up, admitting she was "vain".

"What helped is that my character, Tanya had parallels to me personally. I’d been incredibly depressed during the pandemic," she said.

"I lost my own mother at an early age. A family member passed away during Covid and we couldn’t hold a proper memorial. So I had all that going for me."

Jennifer's mother died from pancreatic cancer shortly after she landed her big break on Seinfeld in 1993 .

"My mother's last words to me were, like, 'I can’t believe it,''' she told Vulture.

"But she was thrilled because she didn’t think anything was going to happen."

Jennifer would then go on to land roles including as Hilary Duff's evil stepmother in A Cinderella Story, Legally Blonde as Paulette, and American Pie as Stifler's mum, and on TV shows Friends, Frasier and Two Broke Girls.

Jennifer would battle a cocaine addiction for several years, something she openly admitted to Vulture, remarking: "What a waste."

Speaking about her joy she is still able to land big roles at an age where a lot of doors close for actresses, Jennifer said she felt "lucky".

She put it partly down to her recent appearance in Ariana Grande's music video for Thank U, Next, as well as her role in the Carey Mulligan film Promising Young Woman.

Jennifer said she thought she had often been "put in a box" as a minor character who offers comedy relief.

But her recent roles have proved she is so much more than that, with her performance in White Lotus hailed "a triumph" by Variety.

Co-starring in the programme is Connie Britton, star of American Horror Story and Dirty John.

During their time filming together, Connie visited Jennifer's supposedly haunted mansion in New Orleans for a night in with pizza and wine - but she was shocked when she arrived.

Connie revealed Late Night With Seth Meyers that Jennifer had texted her to invite her, saying: "No matter what, even if it’s late, you have to come because I feel like the spirits are really strong tonight."

She said the opulent Victorian-style home was "completely candlelit" and she felt like she was "walking into a haunted house from the 1800s" with Jennifer taking ten minutes to actually let Connie in.

They then "waited for the spirits to show up" but sadly, none did, she laughed.

Jennifer, who used to pose as Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter to get into nightclubs, played a sleazy woman obsessed with younger men in American Pie.

And while that's not who Jennifer really is, she took a little inspiration from the role.

"I did date younger men after [American Pie]," she told The Guardian in 2013.

"I really dated younger men for the next 10, 15 years."

She also revisited the topic during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in 2020.

"I have to say [American Pie] has helped me out in a lot of ways," she joked.

"Even as ... there's always someone who has seen that movie lately, and so then you get a whole new group of young guys.

"I'm single, so I'm really using it to my advantage."

Theories about Jennifer's love life have circulated for years, but never been confirmed.

She hilariously revealed to Kelly Clarkson that she once pretended to be a twin so she could date two men who lived in the same area at the same time.

She was rumoured to have dated actor and Saturday Night Live comedian Chris Kattan, ten years her junior, after they were pictured at events together.

In her Vulture interview in July, Jennifer confirmed she is single, but she's a romantic at heart.

"I don’t want this to be the end of my life and my romance and all that," she said.

"But I don’t know how people do it anymore. Sometimes I feel like you got this good little thing going once in a while with somebody. You get too much permission to, you know, be you.

"The thing dissolves pretty quick. There’s so many girls who would be like, 'Well, f**k them. They can’t handle it.' But my feeling is, like, 'Who wants to be alone, too?'"

There have also been false rumours that she is married and has two children, but Jennifer has denied this and told Buzzfeed she is actually infertile.

While reading tweets about herself, she was asked if she gets called a 'MILF' all the time.

"Yeah because of that movie," she replied, referring to American Pie.

"But not because of real life, I don't have any children. I was barren."
