Jenna Coleman divides fans with French accent as some claim it 'ruins' The Serpent

Jenna Coleman split fans across the board over her French accent in The Serpent.

Some viewers claimed the English star's accent "ruined" the BBC crime show while others said the lead actress radiated sex appeal with her performance.

The leading star stepped into the heels of Marie-Andrée Leclerc who was the lover of French serial killer Charles Sobhraj.

BBC's The Serpent tells the story of the hunt for one of the most dangerous murderers Charles posing as a gem dealer and his lover before his eventual imprisonment.

However, some viewers felt Jenna's "fake" French accent "ruined" the mini-series for them.

Leading the troops, one said: "I love Jenna Coleman but her fake French accent in English and English accent in French are appalling. Did @BBCOne not think us bilinguals would notice? Ruined #TheSerpent. I know we francophones are increasingly rare after #brexit but some of us even watch British TV."

Others added: "@jennacoleman if u wanna hear a legit french canadian accent let me know, i also have skype." (sic)

"Losing it already over jenna coleman speaking french i can’t do this."

However, many people were left swooning over Jenna's French accent which they celebrated as "sexy".

"The Serpent seems decent so far and Jenna Coleman can pull off a French accent well enough."

"Watching the serpent and jenna coleman ’s french accent is so sexy pls."

As for Jenna, she said doing the French accent was one of the hardest things she's ever done.

The Victoria star confessed it was "insane" trying to be a convincing French person while acting with other French actors.

However, she had heaps of praise for her French tutor on prepping her for the pronunciation.

She said on Chris Evans Breakfast Show recently: “I have to say that it was one of the hardest things I have ever done.

"It’s one thing being an English person speaking French, but to convincingly be a French person amongst French actors was kind of insane.

“I had an incredible coach… he taught me the English-French and also French-Canadian. It's all different pronunciation which apparently to French people sound very different!”

The Serpent will air on Netflix internationally outside of the UK later this year.
