NEW DELHI: Jemimah Rodrigues showcased her proficiency against slow bowlers, notching up a 26-ball half-century that contributed to Delhi Capitals posting a competitive total of 181 for 5 in their Women's Premier League (WPL) match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday.
Despite Rodrigues' impressive innings, young off-spinner Shreyanka Patil's brilliant four-wicket haul for 26 runs in her four overs proved crucial in slowing down the home team's scoring during the business end of the DC innings.
In front of an enthusiastic holiday crowd, Rodrigues exhibited a wide array of shots, including sweeps, cuts, pulls, and an exquisite inside-out lofted drive. She scored 58 off 34 balls, forming a crucial partnership of 97 runs in just 10.1 overs with Alice Capsey (48 off 32 balls) for the third wicket.
Earlier, Shafali Verma (23 off 18 balls) and Meg Lanning (29 off 26 balls) added 54 for the opening stand before being dismissed in quick succession.
Rodrigues, typically known for her touch play, precise timing, and deft placements, hit eight fours and a six to reach her half-century. Her best shot was an imperious maximum off leg-break bowler Georgia Wareham, lofted over extra cover.
Despite her impactful innings, Rodrigues was bowled round the legs attempting to convert an over-pitched delivery from off-spinner Shreyanka into a paddle sweep.
Capsey, who hit eight boundaries, played a crucial role in maintaining momentum during the death overs. However, Shreyanka Patil's excellent last couple of overs, where she conceded only nine runs, helped keep DC's total in check.
