The Philadelphia Eagles have a head coaching vacancy and running backs coach Duce Staley won’t be a token interview this time.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie told Mike Kaye of NJ Advance Media that he would be in favor of running backs coach Duce Staley interviewing for the vacant head coaching job.
“I would expect Duce Staley to be a candidate,” Lurie said. “He’s a great representative of the Eagles. He knows our values, and I would expect him to be part of the search.”
The strong answer was in response to Kaye asking Lurie about his outlook on minority coaching candidates and the Eagles owner made it clear that was important to him.
Staley was passed over twice for the offensive coordinator job by Pederson after spending the bulk of his playing career here along with his entire coaching career.
Staley carries a presence and he’s someone coaches and players respect and listen to.
Staley was a running back for the Eagles from 1997 to 2003. He joined the staff in 2011 as a special teams quality control coach. Staley eventually worked his way up to become the team’s assistant head coach and running backs coach.
If Staley is hired as a head coach, he would be the second Black coach in the team’s history, following Ray Rhodes, who was hired in 1995.
