Sky Sports Soccer Saturday host Jeff Stelling believes Newcastle United showed they have what it takes to survive in their 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
The Magpies were perhaps a little unfortunate not to come away with all three points against the Red Devils, given the volume and quality of saves David de Gea had to make.
Saint-Maximin handed Eddie Howe’s side the lead inside the opening seven minutes when he arrowed a shot from just inside the area into the top corner.
Newcastle had chances to extend their lead but Edinson Cavani made them pay when he prodded home an equaliser in the second half.
Jacob Murphy hit the post late on, while Miguel Almiron forced de Gea into a stunning stop on the follow up as the Magpies were forced to settle for a point.
Stelling thinks if they can produce that level of performance on a consistent basis, they could avoid the drop.
He tweeted: “If Newcastle can replicate this in games to come they will make some pundits eat their words. Thought Joelinton, St Maximin, Fraser and Shelvey outstanding. In fact they all did a job.”
His praise of Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey in particularly are indicative of the resurgence both players have enjoyed under Howe.
Since moving into a midfield position, Joelinton has produced a string of superb performances – none more so than against Man United, where he was awarded with the man of the match.
Shelvey, who had seemingly lost his way at St. James’ Park under Steve Bruce, is also beginning to return his best form in the black and white.
