Jeff Sessions loses Alabama Senate primary runoff

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions has lost the Republican nomination for Senate to Tommy Tuberville in Alabama in Tuesday night’s primary runoff, AP reports.

Why it matters: Sessions had been the underdog in the race against former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville, who had the backing of President Trump. Tuberville will now face off against Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in November, who is considered to have one of the most vulnerable Democratic Senate seats in the country.

What they're saying: "Wow, just called! @TTuberville - Tommy Tuberville WON big against Jeff Sessions," President Trump tweeted. "Will be a GREAT Senator for the incredible people of Alabama. @DougJones is a terrible Senator who is just a Super Liberal puppet for Schumer & Pelosi. Represents Alabama poorly. On to November 3rd."

The state of play:

  • In Maine, Democratic establishment favorite Sara Gideon won her party's nomination and will face off against Rep. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in November, AP notes.
  • In Texas, Ronny Jackson, President Trump’s ex-White House physician, won the GOP nomination for the state congressional seat, per AP.
