Jeff Hendrick believes Newcastle United can be a top 10 Premier League side

Jeff Hendrick believes he has joined a club with top 10 calibre in Newcastle United.

The Republic of Ireland international feels that Steve Bruce's squad can at least challenge for a top half finish this season and match the achievements of his old club Burnley.

Hendrick played his part in the Lancashire club's 10th place position last term and also helped them finish seventh in 2018.

Asked on bettering last term's 13th place finish for Newcastle in 2020, Hendrick was asked about a climb into the top 10 and replied: "Yeah of course. I don't see why not.

"There's a great group of lads here so it is all about starting the season well and getting points on the board.

"Then you take each game as it comes and see where it takes you in the Premier League."

Hendrick is now on international duty with Ireland and will miss Newcastle's friendly at Middlesbrough today (1pm).

However, after a week with the Newcastle squad, he has settled in well.

He reflected: "I knew Clarkie (Ciaran Clark) from the Ireland set-up but I didn't know too many of the others to talk to.

"They have been great with me this week in training though.

"I know them all from playing against them, so it's been nice."

Life has been hectic for the Dublin-born player since signing for Newcastle last week with Hendrick now facing a trip to eastern Europe to face Bulgaria in the UEFA Nations League.

A clash against in Dublin against Finland will cap off the week ahead just days before Newcastle travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham.

Hendrick, who is also in the process of moving into a new house on Tyneside, said: "It's been busy but you don't mind it.

"These things happen, for me, I have people around me who can help me with that sort of stuff.

"I can just concentrate on training and matches."
