As the world contends with the idea of an imbalance in power — politicians taking their authority beyond the constitution, technocrats 10Xing their electricity intake, Middle Eastern leaders waging wars — one of the world’s richest and most influential people, Jeff Bezos, is busy getting people evicted from Venetian hotels because… he can.
Jeff Bezos has a wedding coming up. It’s reportedly going to cost him up to eight figures by some estimates, and it’s allegedly where some celebrity couples will settle their running scores. But if you don’t care even a little — we promise you, you couldn’t possibly care less than the residents of Venice, the city hosting the wedding.
Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, are reportedly going to shut down half the city for their wedding, which is apparently building up to be the first technocratic dream wedding. Except unlike royal weddings — where Bezos’ budget might match — the love and adoration of the people certainly doesn’t. For most residents, this wedding is just another example of what happens when people don’t pay their fair share of taxes. Protests swiftly followed, prompting a response from the wedding organizers that they would at least provide employment for the occasion.
But the latest chaos created by the wedding is honestly indefensible. Apparently, the soon-to-be newlyweds have rented the entirety of a luxurious Venetian hotel called Aman Venice. According to Page Six, the couple arrived at the hotel with a bevy of at least a dozen security guards who conducted a full sweep of the property.
But it didn’t end there — the security guards reportedly began hounding guests in the hotel lobby with questions about whether they were staying at the hotel or not. Guests were then “booted” once Bezos booked the entire space. According to the publication, Aman is sending them to neighboring hotels and even giving them complimentary upgrades. As you might expect, not all guests were willing to entertain these shenanigans, but there was very little they could do.
Employees at the Aman were also among those complaining. One day they were dealing with regular guests who respected boundaries — the next, they were serving a swarm of A-list celebrities who apparently will expect every request to be fulfilled. It probably won’t be long before it turns into a situation like the Met Gala, where some stylists couldn’t even get in to work on their celebrity clients.
The wedding is expected to create a celebrity blitz that could match the Ambani wedding. There’s a slight difference, though: Bezos has reportedly asked guests to refrain from bringing any gifts. It’s to be assumed that he already has enough. But even that announcement was met with derision, with some X users calling the invitation card to the wedding tacky. It’s starting to seem like people just don’t like Jeff Bezos.

And there’s so little to like, to be fair. His employees are constantly the subjects of exposés on underpayment, a reporter for The Washington Post was killed by the Saudi government for reporting necessary truths — and Bezos later steered the publication to focus solely on capitalism. He bends to every whim of President Trump. People don’t want to see what flaunting that kind of behavior affords him.
