Amazon boss Jeff Bezos' ex-wife to donate half of £29 billion fortune to charity

The ex-wife of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos will donate half of her £29 billion fortune to charity, she has revealed.

MacKenzie Bezos, who split from the American billionaire earlier this year, acquired 4% of the multinational company in the divorce settlement.

Novelist MacKenzie, who married Bezos, 55, in 1993, joined Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Richard Branson in the Giving Pledge.

It was set up by Gates and billionaire investor Warren Buffet as a way for the wealthiest people in the world to give to charity.

Ms Bezos, 49, told of the huge donation in a heartfelt public letter.

She said: "In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share.

"My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful.

"It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”

The couple's recent split after 25 years has been dubbed the world's most expensive, with a reported cost of £108 BILLION.

After the settlement was finalised, MacKenzie said: "Grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage with Jeff with support from each other and everyone who reached out to us in kindness, and looking forward to next phase as co-parents and friends."

Jeff Bezos, who is not involved in the Giving Pledge, has plans to send a spaceship to the moon by 2024.

He is believed to be worth close to £100 billion.

He recently revealed space travel will receive a large chunk of his Amazon wealth.

He told publisher Axel Springer: "The only way that I can see to deploy this much financial resource is by converting my Amazon winnings into space travel.

"That is basically it... I am currently liquidating about $1 billion a year of Amazon stock to fund Blue Origin (his aerospace company).

"I plan to continue to do that for a long time. Because you’re right, you’re not going to spend it on a second dinner out.”

At a recent presentation, Bezos unveiled a model of one of the proposed space rovers, roughly the size of a golf cart, and presented a new rocket engine called BE-7, which can blast 10,000 pounds (4,535 kg) of thrust.

Privately held Blue Origin, based in Kent, Washington, is developing its New Shepard rocket for short space tourism trips and a heavy-lift launch rocket called New Glenn for satellite launch contracts.

A Blue Origin executive told Reuters last month New Glenn rocket would be ready by 2021.

Bezos on Thursday said launching humans on suborbital flights would take place later this year on New Shepard.

Blue Origin has previously discussed a human outpost on the moon.
