Jeff and Mackenzie Bezos to remain billionaires as divorce is finalized

If you're going to send out your first tweet, you might as well make it memorable.

And it's likely that neither Mackenzie Bezos, nor her now ex-husband, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, will forget her first Twitter missive, on Thursday.

Mackenzie Bezos tweeted out some of the details of the Bezos' divorce, and they are big. The former Mrs. Bezos said her ex will retain 75 percent ownership of their Amazon stock, as well as voting rights for the 25 percent of the shares she will continue to own as part of the couple's divorce settlement. Mackenzie Bezos will also relinquish any financial interest she may have had in the Washington Post newspaper and the Blue Origin space exploration company.

"Grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage with Jeff with support from each other and everyone who reached out to us in kindness and looking forward to next phase as co-parents and friends," Mackenzie Bezos said, in what was listed as her first tweet. "Excited about my own plans."

And whatever those plans are, Mackenzie Bezos should be able to afford them by selling a few shares of her Amazon stock.

Based on Amazon's Thursday closing stock price of $1,818.86 a share, and the approximately 78.8 million shares the Bezos' owned prior to their divorce, Mackenzie Bezos' Amazon stake is worth $35.8 billion, while Jeff Bezos' holdings have shrunk to $107.4 billion.

Because of her Amazon holdings, Mackenzie Bezos immediately becomes one of the richest women in the world. According to Forbes' recent billionaire rankings, Mackenzie Bezos will be the third-richest woman on Earth, behind Francoise Bettencourt Meyers and her family, and Alice Walton. Forbes said as of April 2, Meyers, whose grandfather founded French cosmetics giant L'Oreal, is worth $52.9 billion, while Walton, the only daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, is worth $45 billion.

The Bezos' announced their intention to divorce on January 9 after 25 years of marriage. Bezos was soon revealed to have become involved with former TV news anchor Lauren Sanchez.
