Jeep 'doing donuts and wheelspins' causes extensive damage to Gateshead youth football pitches

An inconsiderate 4x4 driver caused extensive damage to football pitches in Gateshead by churning up their pitch.

Young players at Rutherford AFC in Gateshead arrived for their fixtures on Saturday morning and found their games had been cancelled because of devastating damage to one of their fields.

Now bosses say the club faces the likelihood the youngsters won't be able to play games on the pitches in Lobley Hill for the rest of the season because of the extent of the damage.

After last weekend's discovery, Rutherford AFC groundskeeper reported the pitches will be irreparable until after the winter has passed.

Club secretary, Sara Coxon, said:

"These particular pitches are outside of our green-fenced perimeters, so we don't have cameras covering them - but it is in front of a load of houses.

Disgusting: Damages to Rutherford AFC's pitch (Sara Coxon)

"We had a big event on Friday for Bonfire Night, and whilst that was going on at about half 10, someone went round there in a big four by four car - a big heavy truck, so you can imagine the damage.

"They've been doing donuts and wheelspins, but no one was really aware of this until Saturday morning, when we were due to have quite a lot of football games for kids.

"They've obviously turned up in the morning, the pitches have been unplayable and the kids have had to miss out basically."

And Ms Coxon is worried she will never know who has caused the upset.

She added: "Apparently the 4x4 has came down and had its lights off so no-one can see the registration plates, whizzed around for a couple of minutes and drove away.

"So at the minute we're really not sure what or who or anything like that, we're totally in the dark other than the fact that this has happened.

"These are 10 and 11-year-old kids who are obviously going to miss out if we can't repair it."

Sara has been in touch with landowner Gateshead Council regarding the issues, and is waiting for an official complaint to be logged with Northumbria Police.

Gateshead Council and Northumbria Police have been asked to comment.
