Utkarsh Gupta always wanted to do a course in computer science from any of the top five IITs and with All India Rank 431 in JEE Advanced 2018, results of which were announced on Sunday, he will now go ahead with Plan B.
“I don’t think with AIR 431, I’ll be able to get admission in any of the fab five IITs with computer science. I don’t mind taking admission in electrical engineering as I always dreamt of entering into any of the top 5 IITs of the country,” said Utkarsh.
Utkarsh is a high scorer from Lucknow and scored 237 marks out of 360 with 97 in physics, 75 in mathematics and 65 in chemistry JEE Advanced 2018.
“It is the institute and not the course that matters. I will study electrical engineering from IIT Delhi instead of pursuing computer science from any lesser known institute,” Utkarsh, who loves to play cricket, badminton and table tennis, said.
His strategy for his board examination and JEE Advanced 2018, the exam for admissions to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country, was simple.
“While I prepared for JEE, it was simultaneously strengthening my command over science subjects: physics, chemistry and maths. But ahead of the board exams, I focussed only on board exams. Because it is important to score well both in boards and competitive examination,” he said.

And this was his advice for other students who will be writing the exam next year.
A student of City Montessori School, Gomti Nagar branch, Utkarsh scored 94% marks in ISC examination this year.
“We are extremely proud of Utkarsh’s achievement. We knew he would excel. He was persistent in his efforts and performance. A big congratulation to him and his family and of course all our teachers who guided him,” his school principal Abha Anant said.
His father Govind Lal Gupta, a drug inspector with Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA), said his son’s achievement is a proud moment for the entire family.
“I’m posted in Allahabad and have come all the way to Lucknow to celebrate this moment of joy,” his father said.
His mother Veena Gupta is a housewife.
Utkarsh’s teacher at FIIT JEE Lucknow was also proud of his achievement. He scored AIR 1073 in JEE Main.
Haryana’s Pranav Goyal scored 337 marks to top the JEE Advanced 2018, Sahil Jain from Bundi in Rajasthan ranked second and Kailash Gupta from Delhi got the third position.
More than 150,000 students across the country appeared for the first-ever completely computer-based Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) held on May 20.
The maximum number of candidates - 38,231- appeared from the IIT Madras zone, followed by IIT Delhi with 31,884, IIT Bombay with 28,813, IIT Kanpur with 20,428, IIT Kharagpur with 19,145, IIT Roorkee with 14,414 and IIT Guwahati with 11,907.
This year, 18,138 students have cleared the mark and will be vying for 11,290 seats.
Aman Tewari was the top scorer from the city after he secured AIR 256 in JEE Advanced 2017 with 291 marks.
