Jedward call on FAI, IRFU and GAA to take action to help prevent violence against women

Jedward have called on the FAI, IRFU and GAA to take a bigger role in tackling violence against women in the wake of Ashling Murphy’s murder in Tullamore.

The Kildare duo tweeted to urge the nation’s biggest sporting organisations to take an active part in helping to change the culture of male violence against women.

The pair, who are active in social justice movements, tweeted: “Rugby! Football! GAA organisations Get your awareness billboards and educational videos playing at half-time to stop violence against women.”

Their calls come in the aftermath of the brutal death on Wednesday of 23-year-old Ashling Murphy on the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore.

The teacher had been jogging along the canal around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon when she was attacked and later died of her injuries.

Almost a third of suspected murders committed in the state last year were perpetrated by, or are believed to have been perpetrated by, men on women.

Vigils have taken place across the country today and in Britain, while Clontarf RFC have retired the number 23 jersey in memory of Ashling.
