Jean-Phillippe Mateta explains his main focus after completing Crystal Palace loan move

Jean-Philippe Mateta says he is only focused on scoring goals for Crystal Palace after completing an 18-month loan move from Bundesliga side Mainz.

The deal is still subject to international clearance, and Palace have paid an initial €3million (£2.7million) for the loan, while there is an option to buy, believed to be worth around €15million (£13.3million).

The 23-year-old has impressed during his time with Mainz, and has scored 10 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions this season.

And Mateta says that his only focus is on the new challenge of playing for Palace, and finding the back of the net.

"It's difficult, but I don't care a little bit because I am focused on my challenge," Mateta told the club website. "It's a new challenge, I think more about this than Covid or something like this.

"I'm a striker, I like to score. I like to score! Yes, of course [I will kick the corner flag]. Yes, of course - if I score."

Palace fans will be hoping the striker can settle quickly and get among the goals for Roy Hodgson's side, and Mateta says that it is a dream come true to play in the Premier League. He also happens to know London rather well.

"I'm very happy to come to Crystal Palace," he added. "I know this club from a long time ago because I have a lot of family here and it's a hot club, a hot club in England.

"I'm look forward to training, and yes, I'm very happy. Yes, of course, of course, it's my dream [from] when I was a child but now I can play I will show the fans of Crystal Palace what I can do.

"When I was a child, with my mum [I came to London]. I have a lot of family here - aunty, uncle... I know this city."

Mateta says that he is looking forward to working with Hodgson, and the manager's long-standing interest played a part in convincing him to join.

"Yes, [I have spoken to Hodgson] on the phone, but I want to speak to him face to face," Mateta said.

"He said he wanted me, but I know he wanted me because it's not [just] now he wants me, he wanted me before. Me also, I know this manager, a good trainer, does a lot with the team - a good team."
