Jean-Philippe Gbamin on what makes him confident of Everton success and his midfield competition

Jean-Philippe Gbamin is confident he will be able to adapt to the Premier League from the Bundesliga in a positive manner.

The midfielder was handed a rather unexpected debut for Everton in Saturday's opening match of the season against Crystal Palace, replacing the injured Andre Gomes just before half time.

The Ivory Coast international completed his £25 million move from Mainz the day before the Blues' final pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen, but didn't join up with his new teammates until their return to England.

Adapting from Germany to the Premier League isn't an easy task for any player, but the 23-year-old is confident he can achieve it smoothly.

"I think the transition and the settling in period will be positive," he told the ECHO .

"I think the fact that people at the top of the club, management level and director level, have shown that kind of interest in me and the confidence they've put in me is something that makes me determined to pay that back and give that back on the field.

"That, in turn, gives me an inner confidence - the fact that they've shown such positivity towards me."

Gbamin could be called upon once more when Everton take on Watford at Goodison Park on Saturday, with injuries and suspensions potentially depleting Marco Silva's options.

Fabian Delph and Gomes will both be assessed in the week as they attempt to recover from injuries, while Morgan Schneiderlin is suspended after his red card against Palace.

However, when all players are available, the Blues' new man believes the competition for places will only help him develop as a player.

He added: "I think when you've got competition in a squad, it's always a positive thing.

"You can only learn and improve gradually through training sessions and a season when you've got different people vying for positions across certain parts of the field.

"I think there was a high standard of new signings and a high standard here before and you can't help but learn from experienced guys like Delph."

Moise Kean joined Everton shortly after the arrival of Gbamin, with both taking part in their first USM Finch Farm training sessions on the first day.

And, while the midfielder admitted joining the club alongside someone else as helped him settle, the attitude of everyone around the club and the kindness of supporters has been a bigger factor.

The 23-year-old remarked: "I think it does help when you've got two players arriving at the same time, especially of a similar age.

"But I think what really helps is the welcome we've had from everyone. Everyone has really gone out of their way to make us feel at home.

"Both here in the club and also out on the street and around the town, people have been really positive and really cool with me - everyone who has been up to say hello."
