Jean-Claude Darcheville recalls 'worst career moment' against Lyon after disaster Rangers miss

Jean-Claude Darcheville has recalled his 'worst career moment' when he scooped a glorious open goal opportunity over the crossbar as Rangers fell to defeat against Lyon.

The Frenchman admits he will never forget the moment Barry Ferguson's pass fell to his feet.

The Gers had found themselves a goal down through Sydney Gouvou's strike but had the chance to level through their striker.

As it was, he missed and Karim Benzema finished the Light Blues off with a late brace to end their evening.

Darcheville allowed frustration from the defeat and perhaps more pertinently his miss to get the better of him and he was sent-off late on.

And, with Steven Gerrard's men facing the Ligue 1 outfit tomorrow evening, Darcheville still says that night in 2007 will always haunt him.

Speaking to the Daily Record he said: "We did so well in Europe that season. We beat Lyon away but the result in the second game in Glasgow was no good because we lost 3-0.

“For me, the memories of that night are painful because when the score was 1-0 to Lyon, I had a big opportunity to score. But I didn’t.

“I also got a red card in the last minute so it’s not a night I like to look back on too much.

“It was the worst night of my career.

“As a striker, when you don’t score a chance like that it is very difficult to understand why.

"It was a huge moment in the game. If I’d scored and made it 1-1, maybe the game would have changed. Maybe Rangers would have made it to the next stage of the Champions League.

“It’s not possible for a striker to have that chance and not score it. I still look back on that and wonder how it happened. It was the biggest miss of my career.”
