A "heartbroken" scaffolder smashed his girlfriend’s mobile phone after catching her on a dating site, a court heard yesterday.
Ryan Wight seized the device from “on/off” partner Brooke Thomson after visiting her at the East Lothian tanning salon where she worked.
Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard Brooke received a notification from someone on a dating site she was using.
Wight grabbed the phone to check for other messages before destroying it, the court was told.
Fiscal depute Ross Carvel said the incident began at the Tanz salon in Musselburgh on February 9.
He said: “There was a notification on Brooke’s phone which the accused was not content with.
“The accused seized the mobile and left the premises in possession of it.
“The accused refused to return it and smashed it on the ground.”
The court heard dad-of-three Wight, from Musselburgh, and Brooke became a couple in December 2018.
Defence agent Euan Gosney said it had become an “on-off relationship” since the beginning of this year.
He said: “Mr Wight’s position is that he and Brooke had spent the night together.
“He received a notification from her asking him to attend her place of work so he could return her headphones which she’d left in his work van.”
Mr Gosney said Brooke received a dating site notification and Wight seized her phone in a “fit of pique” to check for other ones.
The solicitor said Wight told cops he’d “felt heartbroken” and his “temper got the better of him”.
Mr Gosney said his client and Brooke were no longer together and she was in a new relationship.
Sheriff Adrian Cottam fined Wight £180.
