Jealous brute tried to kill lover in horrific three-day ordeal hours after leaving jail

A jealous thug who tried to kill his lover just hours after being freed from jail has been locked up for more than six years.

Michael Nolan, 26, subjected Shannon Inglis to a terrifying ordeal spanning three days.

The 24 year-old was stabbed, punched, kicked and bit last November. The knife snapped and Nolan claimed Shannon was “lucky” it had.

He had “lost the plot” after a male work colleague texted Shannon.

Nolan also turned on his mum Linda Scallan when she tried to stop her crazed son at the house in Motherwell, Lanarkshire.

He had previously been guilty of attacking Shannon in 2019. Nolan was then separately jailed for another assault later in the year.

Nolan was yesterday sentenced to six years and five month for these latest crimes.

He had admitted at the High Court in Glasgow to a string of charges including the attempted murder of Shannon and assaulting his mum.

Lord Matthews said Nolan had been driven by “drink, jealousy and a desire to be in control”.

He told him: “You are a significant danger to your partner. She must be allowed to live her life as she wishes to.”

Nolan will also be supervised for three years on his release. He was further hit with an order banning him from contacting Shannon.

The court heard the couple had been in an “on-off” relationship.

Shannon decided to make a “fresh start” when he got out of jail last November 29.

They went back to his mum's home where Nolan soon started downing vodka.

He smashed Shannon's phone after a message from a work-mate.

Prosecutor Liam Ewing QC said the thug branded her a “s**t” before punching and kicking his lover.

Mr Ewing: “He did so on several occasions during the course of the evening through to 3 or 4am the next morning.”

Nolan accused her of sleeping with another man while yelling: “If you admit it I will stop hitting you.”

But, Nolan was careful not to hit her on the face as they were due to visit a relative and he did not want anyone seeing her injuries.

The couple were still together at the house at 5pm.

Nolan turned on Shannon again, choking her and leaving her bleeding.

Mr Ewing: “His mother attempted to pull her son away to prevent him assaulting her further.

“He grabbed his mother by the throat, pinned her against a wall and then headbutted her.”

Shannon curled up to protect herself, but Nolan then grabbed a knife and repeatedly struck her.

Mr Ewing: “The blade of the knife snapped. He then said: “Your luck has just got better with that knife breaking'.

“I'd happily do 20 years for you. If I can't have you, no one can.”

Nolan brandished the women at both women and took his mum's phone.

He called a friend to say he had “hostages”.

It was only around 2am, Nolan's mum managed to flee the house. She then met a man, who called police.

A blood stained Nolan was later held. He told officers: “All I am going to say is my woman...I would f***ing die for her.

“There's no excuse for hitting a woman, but no comment.”

Shannon suffered a number of injuries to the head and body after being struck by the knife as well as “extreme facial swelling” and bruising.

Rhonda Anderson, defending, yesterday said: “He continues to express love for his ex- partner, but he is clearly resigned that he cannot go back there.”
