Jealous ex attacked mum in school playground as 'terrified' children watched on

A mum shouted "you've been s******* my boyfriend" as she attacked her love rival on her child's school playground.

As shocked parents and children watched on, Michelle Clough pulled another mum's hair and kicked her.

South Tyneside Magistrates' Court heard the fracas unfolded after Clough discovered "explicit messages" between the victim and her now ex-partner on Facebook.

As the victim picked her daughter up from the Sunderland school, she noticed Clough.

"At that point she [Clough] saw red, lost control of her temper and proceeded to assault her," said a probation worker at her sentencing hearing.

Clough has been spared prison by District Judge Kathryn Meek, who slammed her actions.

"Children would have been terrified," said the judge about the July 8 incident.

"You pulled her hair and kicked her when she was down.

How are offenders sentenced?

"Your child will forever remember what happened on that playground."

The court heard Clough approached the victim, who said "not in front of the bairns" as she was attacked.

The victim declined a restraining order against Clough, who is "embarrassed and ashamed" by her actions which were caught on CCTV.

The mum, of King Henry Court, Sunderland, received a 12-month community order after pleading guilty to assault by beating.

At an earlier hearing, Clough's bizarre behaviour included disco dancing before magistrates, who she saluted.

However, at this week's hearing, she sobbed as the court was told she drinks up to four litres of wine a day as a "coping mechanism".

"It is not great," said her solicitor, Harry Burn, about the attack.

Mr Burn said the mum had been a victim of abusive relationships, one of which was so bad she now suffers post-traumatic stress disorder.

However, despite her problem drinking, Clough was said to be sober when she unleashed the playground attack.

"I don't think there was an intention to assault the lady in question," added Mr Burn.

"She's ashamed of what she's done."

Clough will now be offered help to tackle her drinking as part of a year-long community order, while she must pay the victim £200 compensation from her benefits.

After hearing Clough made comments about her victim on Facebook after the attack, District Judge Meek also prohibited her from mentioning her on social media as part of the order.

She warned the defendant: "Do the order or you risk your life spiralling out of control.

"Carry on behaving like this and you're going to walk yourself into prison."
