Jealous Edinburgh man threatened to kill his partner after pals wind up about her joining Tinder

An Edinburgh man threatened to kill his partner after his pals told him she had joined Tinder, in a prank gone wrong.

The wind-up by his pals infuriated Sam Carlin and he went to her house in a rage, believing she had joined Tinder and was cheating on him.

The 34 year-old, punched and kicked the door of the property, injuring himself as he raged, while telling her: “You are a f*****g sl**.”

It later emerged one of Carlin’s friends “thought it would be funny” to pretend his partner was on Tinder as they drank at a funeral.

Carlin appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Monday and admitted a charge of threatening or abusive behaviour.

Fiscal depute Sanah Idrees said Carlin and the woman had been in an “on/off relationship” for a number of years.

Ms Idrees said it was about 7.30pm when the woman heard someone trying her door handle, apparently to gain entry.

The court heard she checked through the spy hole and saw Carlin whom she hadn’t been expecting.

The prosecutor said: “The accused has started to bang on the door asking to be allowed inside.

“He said, “You are a f*****g sl**”, and accused her of cheating on him.

“The accused has then started to violently punch and kick the door and at some point hurt himself during the process.

“The accused said, “Open the f*****g door or I will f*****g kill you”. The police were called.”

Defence agent Stuart Carson said his client had been at a funeral on the day of the incident on November 13 where he’d been drinking.

Mr Carson said one of Carlin’s pals “though it would be funny” to pretend his partner had a Tinder account.

The solicitor said: “That led to jealousy and a loss of self-control and he went round to his partner’s home. That explains some of the comments.

“One of his friends was trying to wind him up.”

Mr Carson said Carlin had worked as a painter and decorator until eight years ago when he suffered a fractured skull during a robbery at a cash machine in Dalkeith, Midlothian.

He said Carline spent six months in hospital following the horrific attack and hasn’t been able to work due to “balance difficulties”.

Sheriff Adrian Fraser deferred sentence on Carlin, of the city’s Gracemount area, until later this month for reports.
