'Jealous' boyfriend stabbed partner and threatened to 'cave her head in'

A “jealous” man stabbed his partner in the arm then stopped her going to hospital and told her to clean herself up in the bathroom.

Robert Greening threatened to kick out Kelly Moore’s teeth during an argument at home then armed himself with a knife and lunged at her, leaving her with a deep wound.

Cardiff Crown Court heard the abusive defendant shouted: “This is what you made me do.”

Steven Donoghue, prosecuting, said the incident happened at Ms Moore’s home in Pontypool on May 26.

The court heard they had been in a relationship for around five years and Greening had a history of jealousy. Prosecutors said Ms Moore suspected he had installed an app on her phone in an attempt to monitor her.

Mr Donoghue told the court they had an argument and the complainant became “frightened”. She went outside for a cigarette to give him a chance to calm down but he did not.

A neighbour heard Greening shout at her: “I will kick your f***ing teeth out. I will cave your head in.” Prosecutors said the defendant armed himself with a knife and shouted: “I will kill you.”

Mr Donoghue added: “He lunged towards her. She put her right arm up to protect herself and the knife penetrated her arm, causing a stab wound.”

The court heard Greening would not let his partner leave the property to go to hospital, instead telling her to go to the bathroom to wash off the blood. Prosecutors said she managed to get out and asked a van driver for help.

The court heard he called the police and offered to let her sit in his locked van but she was scared Greening would attack him too.

Ms Moore walked to the police station in Pontypool, arriving just before 2pm, and told an officer she had been stabbed.

Officers went to search the address and found a rucksack in the kitchen containing two knives. A 5in-long black-handled folding knife had blood on it.

Greening, who was still at the property, told the police: “We were arguing – I’m not going to lie. I had the knife on me. We had an argument. I didn’t man to stab her.”

When he was interviewed he claimed he had the knife with him to work on some electrical wiring. He claimed he cut her “by accident” during the argument.  Prosecutors said Ms Moore was treated at hospital for a “deep” puncture wound.

The court heard the defendant had 31 previous offences on his record with his last for criminal damage in 2017.

Mr Donoghue said Greening was sentenced in July 2008 for harassment relating to a previous girlfriend and a restraining order was imposed.

Greening, 38, from Farlow Walk in Cwmbran , admitted unlawful wounding.

Hashim Salmman, defending, pointed out his client did not have a history of violence or using weapons and asked for credit for his guilty plea. Mr Salmman said the defendant’s family circumstances had led him to abuse alcohol and amphetamine.

Judge Eleri Rees described the injury as a “nasty wound”. She jailed Greening for 19 months and made a five-year restraining order.
