Republican Ohio Sen. JD Vance has been selected as the running mate for former President Trump in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The announcement was made at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Vance, a newcomer to elected office, was elected to the Senate in 2022. He gained national attention after the publication of his book 'Hillbilly Elegy' in 2016, which detailed his upbringing in a struggling Appalachian family and resonated with many Americans who support Trump's policies.
Prior to his political career, Vance worked as a venture capitalist at Peter Thiel's Mithril Capital and briefly at a corporate law firm. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a deployment to Iraq.
Vance emerged victorious in a competitive Republican primary for his Senate seat before going head-to-head with Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan, a former presidential candidate, in a closely watched general election in November of that year.
