JD Gyms is taking over the Xercise4Less premises in Swansea

JD Gyms is opening up in Swansea - taking over from the popular Xercise4Less. Located at Parc Tawe Retail Park North, the gym is to be given a complete transformation into what has been described as "a brand new, incredible fitness space."

It will feature new equipment across the gym and an extension to the free weights area, along with 300 classes a month.

There will be a new functional area with a rig, and a complete overhaul with new decor and lighting.

JD Gyms completed the acquisition of the trade and assets of Xercise4Less, which had hundreds of members at its Swansea base, in July, 2020.

It announced at the time on its website: "We will be investing significantly into the Xercise4Less estate and the gyms will benefit from a refurbishment programme."

Managing director of JD Gyms, Alun Peacock, had said: “We are delighted to have completed this acquisition which enhances our position in the highly competitive gym market and which will ensure the continued employment of many hundreds of people."

We reported in September last year how Xercise4Less was issued with a closure notice after Swansea Council's public health officers found a "large number" of users where social distancing was not enforced. It was allowed to re-open following a further visit to the premises.

Members of Xercise4Less have been sent an e-mail stating that payments will remain frozen until the gym re-opens, along with an offer concerning their membership.

It is not the only change afoot in Parc Tawe at the moment.

Things have looked a lot brighter for the future of its half empty south side in recent months, with the likes of Aldi set to move into the old Toys R Us unit, and Burger King planning on creating a new drive-thru restaurant there. A new access road has also been approved.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), meanwhile, has asked Swansea Council for permission to move into the retail park.

The plans are still in their early stages, with the scope of the application yet to be revealed, but the DWP has asked to transform unit seven from retail use into a base for financial and professional services.

And there's set to be new life at unit 2A of Parc Tawe, as the council has just approved plans from Frederick Whitcomb of RBL Projects to transform it into a new kitchen, sales and showroom store.
