SALT LAKE CITY _ This defeat hurt.
The Orlando Magic took a 102-97 lead over the Utah Jazz with 3:54 to go but allowed 13 consecutive points to lose control of the game.
The Magic fell 114-107.
The Jazz caught a break after they fell behind 102-97 on a driving layup by Elfrid Payton.
Aaron Gordon fouled Gordon Hayward as Hayward launched a 3, and Hayward made all of his free throws to pull the Jazz within 102-100 with 3:07 remaining.
A short while later, Hayward drove and dished to Derrick Favors, who dunked as he absorbed a foul by Serge Ibaka. Favors made the foul shot, putting the Jazz ahead 103-102.
Utah's Rodney Hood followed with a 3-pointer from the right corner.
Meanwhile, the Magic had five consecutive possessions without a basket and went 3 minutes, 8 seconds without a point. Ibaka ended the drought by making a close-range shot with 45.8 seconds remaining, but the Jazz led 110-104.
The Jazz withstood one of the best nights of Payton's career. The third-year point guard scored a career-high 28 points and added nine rebounds and nine assists.
Anchored by shot-blocking center Rudy Gobert, who finished with 19 points and 19 rebounds, the Jazz entered the night ranked first in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense and first in points allowed per possession.
So the Magic had a plan: push the ball up court at every opportunity, even after the Jazz made baskets, to prevent the Jazz defense from setting itself.
The tactic worked _ during the first three quarters.
Payton zoomed to the Jazz hoop repeatedly in the first quarter. At one point, he drove through the lane, elevated and threw down a ferocious right-handed dunk that prompted Ibaka, Mario Hezonja, Nikola Vucevic, C.J. Watson and Damjan Rudez to leap off their seats on the bench.
Orlando made 65.2 percent of its first-quarter shot attempts and scored 42 first-quarter points.
