A cowardly monster who kidnapped a 13-year-old girl and murdered both her parents has today been jailed for the rest of his life.
Jake Patterson, 21, shot dead James Closs through the letter box of his home and then killed wife Denise in the bathtub.
The murderer held Jayme hostage for 88 days in his rural cabin in Gordon, Douglas County, US, about 112 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
Now Patterson has been sentenced to life in jail on each of the two murder charges, and a further consecutive term for the kidnap.
Sentencing the killer, the judge said: "Mr Patterson, you intentionally murdered two innocent parents, parents trying to protect their daughter.
"You planned this, you had a mask, you stole a licence plate so you could not be discovered. You murdered Miss Closs' parents within feet of her or right next to her.
"You have what I would say alarmingly distorted views, anti-social cognitions. For all of this, I have no idea if there is treatment."
"The ideas and your actions are not normal, they are shockingly not normal.
"I have been a judge for 16 years. These crimes are the most heinous I have since in the state of Wisconsin. I was shocked by their brutalness."
The victims' tearful family members told the court their pain today.
Jayme was for months feared dead but somehow managed to escape in January - some three months on.
In a statement read in court, Jayme said: "He will always leave me with a horrifying memory. I now have to live with an alarm at my home.
"I feel like what he did is what a coward would do.
"He stole my parents from me. He stole nearly everything I loved from me."
Jennifer Smith, Denise's sister, said: "To the defendant, you have taken so much away from myself and my family. It hurts so bad.
"Jayme no longer has her parents who were her world. She was their world.
"She lives in fear, doesn't have a normal 13-year-old life, and that's all from what you did, it's so heartbreaking."
An emotional clip of the 911 call was played to the court.
Mike Closs, James' brother, said: "I think about it [the day James and Denise were killed] every day.
"I had the undaunting task of going to my mum's house to tell her that her son and her daughter-in-law had been killed and her granddaughter was missing. That was the hardest thing I'd had to ever do.
"The next 88 days were unbearable."
It since emerged Patterson kept the girl locked in his room and barricaded her under his bed when he had guests.
He told authorities he randomly decided to abduct Jayme after watching her board a school bus near Barron, Minneapolis, in October last year.
He shot Jayme's parents with his own dad's shotgun, it today emerged.
But in March, the defendant admitted two counts of first-degree murder , one count of kidnap and one count of false imprisonment.
Jayme's friends and family members wept in the court in Wisconsin.
But lawyers defending Patterson said he was very remorseful and had no previous convictions.
Speaking in court, a tearful Patterson said: "I would do absolutely anything to bring them back. I'm just sorry."
Hundreds of police officers and thousands of volunteers searched for Jayme from October to January.
Investigators reviewed more than 2,000 tips in the hunt, one of the largest and most high-profile missing person searches in recent US history.
