Jaylon Tate reinstated to Illinois basketball team after charge dropped

May 20--Illinois reinstated guard Jaylon Tate to the basketball team Friday, one day after prosecutors dropped a domestic-battery charge against him.

No decision has been reached on guard Kendrick Nunn, who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery earlier this week in Champaign, stemming from an arrest in March.

Both rising seniors, who played together at Simeon before joining the Illini, had been indefinitely suspended since their arrests five days apart.

The state attorney's office concluded Thursday it did not have enough evidence to convict Tate.

"Jaylon has shown exceptional character during this unfortunate situation, and in light of yesterday's decision and our own conclusions, we have welcomed Jaylon back to the program," athletic director Josh Whitman said in a statement. "We encourage our community and fans to do the same."

Nunn will avoid a conviction on his record if he completes 100 hours of community service and a 26-week partner abuse prevention program and writes a letter of apology to the victim while under 18 months of court supervision.

Nunn had two counts of domestic battery dropped as part of the plea deal.

Forward Leron Black pleaded guilty in April to misdemeanor aggravated assault and was sentenced to a year of probation after an arrest in February for threatening a nightclub bouncer with a knife. He was reinstated to the team and will be suspended for the first four games of the 2016-17 season.
