Jaylen Brown needs to improve to justify his supermax contract

On Tuesday, July 25, Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics agreed to a five-year supermax contract worth $304 million. The deal will have no player option, although there is a trade kicker. Brown became eligible for a ‘Designated Veteran Player Extension’ after being named to the 2023 All-NBA second team.

In a recent episode on his new YouTube channel, Adam Taylor of CelticsBlog and USA Today shares his thoughts on Brown’s new contract. Taylor also discusses the importance of both Jayson Tatum and Brown working together to develop a two-man game, especially now that Boston is taking steps to commit their long-term future to the All-Star wing duo.

“At this point, if you’re committing 70% of your cap to these two guys, they damn sure better be in the gym together, figuring out what type of actions work for them together,” Taylor said. “I think they’re more than capable of doing so. I think that now this money has been committed, we are rightfully going to expect a bit of a jump in their two-man game production.”

Brown’s new contract won’t kick in until the 2024-25 season and will run until 2029.
