Jay Leno surprises intern who became 'like a son' after fire accident with home makeover

Jay Leno lent a helping hand to his former intern David in a heartwarming new episode of Celebrity IOU on HGTV - just months after suffering burns from a fire.

The hit TV programme, which premiered in April 2020, sees home renovation experts, twins Drew and Jonathan Scott, help Hollywood A-listers surprise loved ones with heart-warming home renovations.

In Monday's episode of the sweet show, American host and comedian Jay helped out his former intern - who he employed 14 years ago.

David, his former intern, even cared for Jay after his garage fire last November.

The 73-year-old comedian enlisted the help of the home renovation experts when they met with him at his garage, which was brimming with vintage cars and motorbikes.

Jay, who suffered severe burns to his body after his garage fire last year, spoke fondly of his former intern who went on to become a director and producer.

The former host of The Tonight Show, who headed it up from 1986 until 2009, was in a medical emergency after he suffered "serious face burns" after one of his cars "erupted into flames" unexpectedly last winter.

One day after his accident he told Variety that he had "got some serious burns from a gasoline fire."

"I am OK. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet," he added.

Supported by his former intern, Jay wanted to repay Davis who stuck by his side throughout his recovery after the terrifying fire.

"When I had my accident, you know, I set myself on fire there, [David] would pick my wife up and bring her to the hospital and bring food and do things like that.

"I think that's what friendship is. I don't have a son, but I think this is what it would be like," he said of his friend and former intern.

Because of the support that David had given Jay, the TV star enlisted the help of the experts in order to renovate his bathroom and nursery.

He wanted to lend a helping hand as he was about to have a baby with his wife Margaret.

With a four-week deadline, Jay even helped the experts with the renovation despite having recently broken his collarbone and ribs in a motorcycle.

Helping the twins out, Jay picked out some wallpaper, helped remove tiles and lent a helping hand to the experts.

"You guys are amazing. Just a wonderful job," he said to the twins when the home was finished within the deadline.

David then returned home and was in disbelief as he gushed: "Both my wife and I watch The Property Brothers on TV.

"And then to see them come through our front door, that was a really pretty unique, uh, experience."

Completely taken aback and totally grateful, David said: "I think Jay and the brothers struck the right balance between modern and preserving the character of the house."

With Margaret left swooning: "Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh, it's beautiful."
