Jay Gruden won’t reveal backup QB behind Colt McCoy

After a drawn-out drama that was always apparently going to end in Colt McCoy serving as the starter, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden isn’t ready to announce who his backup will be.

Gruden revealed that tidbit of info Friday, per NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay, and also said “It’s unfortunate we had this dilemma,” according to Zach Selby of the team’s official site.

Gruden didn’t have much of a choice but to roll with rookie Dwayne Haskins as the backup behind Case Keenum thanks to McCoy’s recovery timetable.

Last week though, Gruden tossed Haskins into the fire after a putrid start from Keenum and the rookie ended up throwing three picks.

Now, Keemum’s health might ultimately decide who gets to serve as McCoy’s backup. Based on the fact knowledge of the offense is a big part of why Gruden named McCoy the starter in the first place this week, it figures to be Keenum.

If the third quarterback ends up inactive, this could end up being a bigger story than the Redskins probably anticipated.
