Jay Gruden: ‘We’re trying to win a game right now’

Despite finishing seven of the last 10 seasons with a losing record and missing the playoffs in five of the last six years, the Washington Redskins feel they are in a position to win now.

The recent acquiring of QB Case Keenum — as well as the addition of S Landon Collins and expected emergence of RB Derrius Guice — points toward Washington putting all of their chips in the middle of the table, hoping to find some success on the field.

The Redskins are taking that same mentality into the NFL Draft this month as well.

“There is no developmental process here,” Gruden said, according to John Keim of ESPN.com.”This is not Triple-A baseball; we’re [not] trying to develop a pitcher here. We’re trying to win a game right now. If we draft a quarterback in the first, second, third or seventh rounds and he’s going to start Day 1, we expect great things from him.”

The Redskins hold the No. 15 pick in the draft, and there are a lot of questions and ideas surrounding what they might do with that pick. Could they trade up to grab a future-franchise QB? Will they bide their time and select a talented WR to help bolster their playmaking on the edges? Will they choose to make some outlandish decision that 95% of the fanbase ends up disagreeing with, leading to #FireBruceAllen trending on Twitter again?

No matter who is chosen, the expectation will remain lofty. Washington wants to win now — they had better start collecting the talent to make that possible.
