Jay Gruden wants to get Josh Doctson more chances

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden wants to see Josh Docston playing a bigger role as soon as possible.

It is no secret Doctson, a former first-round pick, has struggled to have a big impact capable of matching lofty expectations since joining the league.

Speaking with the media after camp practice though, Redskins coach Jay Gruden noted some of this might have been by design, according to The Athletic’s Rhiannon Walker:

“‘He has very seldom been the first progression in a lot of these plays.’ Sometimes when teams have played man-to-man Josh Doctson has been the second or third progression, and that may change this season Jay Gruden said.”

Of course, if Redskins coaches didn’t think Doctson was worthy of the first looks, then that’s a problem on its own.

Gruden still wants to make it work, though:

Nobody more than Doctson would like it to work considering he had his fifth year declined — he has all preseason to prove capable of the chances.
