Jay Gruden talks about what he’s looking for in rookie QBs

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden might have to draft a quarterback in the first round this year.

While he has Case Keenum and Colt McCoy on the roster, Gruden and the front office might decide the value is right on a first-round passer.

If they do, plenty of interesting targets like Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins could make the decision difficult.

Gruden talked a little bit about both and what he’s looking for recently.

“You would like a guy to play more than a year to see how he’s developed,” Gruden said, according to ESPN’s John Keim. “Haskins has a unique skill set. He’s big, strong and can really throw it. Is he going to be ready for the first year? Ideally a couple of these guys you’d like to have them sit a year maybe to get them in your system, learn to get to know your guys and play — especially those guys who only played one year. But Kyler has such a unique skill set with his 4.3 [speed], his ability to get outside the pocket. If he’s a scheme fit for whoever takes him, he can play Year 1 if they utilize the skills he has.”

Gruden went on to explain he isn’t a fan of having up to three quarterbacks competing for a starting job, citing the lack of meaningful snaps for all of them.

From the sounds of it, Gruden would want a rookie who can come in and start right away — and he has experience in this regard already after his days in Cincinnati when he developed Andy Dalton.

In all, some talking points to keep in mind when thinking about the Redskins and a first-round quarterback this year. Should it happen, it doesn’t seem like the rookie will sit and learn for a year.
