Jay Gruden still not sure if QB Dwayne Haskins will start for Redskins

With position battles heating up in the NFL, Ohio State standout and Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins is in the midst of a three-headed one himself.

Hes currently battling Colt McCoy and Case Keenum for the starting quarterback role in Washington. And while those two have both been in and failed numerous starting gigs, Haskins hasn’t quite proven himself as an elite QB.

Tossing two interceptions in his NFL debut, Haskins clearly still has a good bit to learn about the timing and speed of the sport’s highest level. However, the No. 15 pick should get there.

Will he get there in time to become the starting quarterback though?

We’ll know in just a few weeks as Jay Gruden plans to announce who has won the starting role prior to the team’s third preseason outing. It’d be a smart move by Gruden to give the rookie QB the confidence over two short-term options.

Even if it isn’t Haskins — which is where things appear to be headed, there really shouldn’t be any panic. Just one rookie quarterback, Kyler Murray, is lined up to begin the season as the team’s clear starter. This feels like a great time to remind all those folks getting down on Haskins to take a look at how Peyton Manning took lumps and underperformed his first season in Indianapolis.

How’d that turn out?

That said, expect Haskins to be better in the team’s second preseason outing which will be tomorrow against one of the league’s worst defenses — the Cincinnati Bengals.
