Jay Gruden singles out Samaje Perine with praise

One would think it might be hard for a running back to break through with the Washington Redskins right now.

But the idea doesn’t seem to apply to Samaje Perine.

Perine has the attention of Redskins coach Jay Gruden, as illustrated by Jake Kring-Schreifels and Kyle Stackpole of Redskins.com:

“Samaje [Perine] really has been the guy that has been most impressive. He’s been out here taking all the reps. He’s really improved in not only the running game, but also in the passing game. That’s three pretty good backs right there,” Gruden said. “Then we have Byron [Marshall], Chris Thompson and Craig Reynolds that have done an excellent job. … It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.”

Impressive, considering Perine sits behind Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice on the depth chart, not to mention spell back Chris Thompson. Rookie Bryce Love could eventually make things interesting, too.

Still, Perine has been popular with fans since he joined the team in 2017 via the fourth round. But he was only able to get in five games last year, carrying the ball eight times.

If the logjam clears though and Perine keeps developing, his sticking and having an impact isn’t totally out of the question.
