Jay Gruden says ‘it would be silly to’ narrow down QB battle right now

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden isn’t ready to narrow down the quarterback battle that currently consists of Case Keenum, Colt McCoy and Dwayne Haskins.

Gruden had two of the three in the team’s first preseason game against Cleveland for some work and hasn’t seen enough yet, telling the Washington Post’s Les Carpenter “It would be silly to” narrow the competition or make declarations about it.

Carpenter shared more: “Gruden said ‘he hopes somebody will take over’ in the quarterback battle but so far everyone has impressed enough for it to be a three-way fight”

Haskins, the rookie, had his two notable interceptions but also managed 117 yards and a strong 17 yards on two carries, showing a play-making ability the team likes. Keenum was a steady 4-of-9 with 60 yards and a score.

For now, McCoy is still being brought along slowly, though he’s the one of those three with the most experience with the system and team.

Until Gruden gets all three on the field, it’s hard to imagine he’ll offer much on this front. If he and the fans are lucky, everyone will get on the field for Thursday’s game against Cincinnati.
