Jay Gruden says Dwayne Haskins still has ‘a long way to go’

The Washington Redskins’ fanbase is still on Cloud Nine following the NFL Draft, where their team picked Dwayne Haskins with the No. 15 pick, hoping that he can eventually turn into a franchise savior.

The abundance of highlights and positive rumors have buoyed the fans throughout spring OTAs sessions and minicamp practices. What they haven’t seen, however, are the multitude of missteps and shortcomings that the rookie has gone through so far in his short NFL career.

There have been numerous interceptions thrown, as well as missed reads and airmailed passes. A rookie quarterback is going to go through growing pains—it’s a tale as old as time—Haskins is no different.

“There is a lot to learn for the kid, but we want to get it all out there for him so he has an understanding of what it is going to be like come training camp,” head coach Jay Gruden said, via Redskins.com. “A long way to go, but I like where he is at.”

Haskins has stated that he is not worried about whether or not he starts come Week 1, and he plans to spend his entire summer in the team facilities working on his game.

With any young player, there has to be a growing period where they learn the in’s and out’s of a faster and more physical game. For Haskins, that moment is now—let’s just hope that Case Keenum can keep the ship afloat while the rookie is getting his feet under him.
