Jay Gruden reveals Redskins considered trade up for Dwayne Haskins

The Washington Redskins showed some serious restraint by not trading up for Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the 2019 NFL draft.

Haskins fell in their laps at No. 15.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden told the media after the draft that talk about a trade up to make sure they grabbed Haskins certainly happened.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo had the report: “Jay Gruden said there was talk of the Redskins moving up to get Dwayne Haskins but in the end they felt there weren’t enough teams that needed a QB so they could sit at 15 and let him come to them. They were correct.”

The Redskins got a big win in this regard. Cincinnati and Miami ended up passing on Haskins and Denver even traded out of the 10th pick.

This saved the Redskins some assets, which they then presumably turned around and used to trade back up into the first round to grab edge rusher Montez Sweat at No. 26.

It won’t be hard to find universal praise for the Redskins’ draft performance — ignoring the urge to trade up for Haskins will be the main reason for it.
