Jay Gruden names Case Keenum the Redskins starting quarterback for Week 1

It’s official: Case Keenum will be the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins when they begin the regular season on Sept. 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jay Gruden made the announcement after practice on Sunday, which gives the team two weeks to prepare the first-team offense and solidify the pieces around Keenum.

The move to make Keenum QB1 does not come as a surprise, as many thought that he would eventually be named the starter when coming to Washington this offseason. However, weeks of speculation about rookie QB Dwayne Haskins can now be put on the back burner.

Haskins still might have a chance to start during his rookie year, but it won’t happen unless Keenum proves he’s not up to snuff running the offense. Should the Redskins be able to squeak out victories under his guidance, then he will not be pushed out anytime soon.
