Jay Gruden offers a positive Alex Smith update

Jay Gruden thinks Alex Smith could surprise some onlookers when it comes to the pace of his recovery.

The injured Washington Redskins quarterback was expectedly a topic of conversation during minicamp Tuesday, where Gruden offered some interesting notes.

Via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

Gruden says Alex Smith is “recovering nicely”. Calls it a pretty lengthy process but thinks Smith will be back sooner than people think. Can he throw the football as seen in recent photo? Gruden smiles and cracks: “He can play catch.”

Smith had previously made headlines at Day 3 of OTAs in May by showing up and getting some throws in with his teammates.

But Smith is still quite a long way away from seriously considering getting back on the field as a player. He’s clearly not throwing in the towel by any measure and will be around to help out his fellow quarterbacks. But the positivity from Gruden is at least a good sign.

In the meantime, Case Keenum and Dwayne Haskins will compete for the starting job while Smith lends help where he can during his recovery process.
