Jay Gruden names Ereck Flowers the starting left guard, for now

With a week left in the preseason, depth charts around the league are starting to be finalized. We even put out our own guess as to what the Washington Redskins starting lineup would look like come Week 1, but there was one position that we struggled with.

Who is going to start at left guard for the Redskins?

The entire left side of the line has been a jumbled mess this preseason due to the void left in the wake of Trent Williams’ holdout. Veteran Donald Penn was signed in order to try and shore up the backside, but he has been less than stellar this offseason. Ereck Flowers was also brought in to compete for a starting spot, and the Redskins drafted guard Wes Martin as well.

With the regular season less than two weeks away, there has yet to be a player who has stepped up and taken control of the left side. Washington coach Jay Gruden named Penn the starting tackle, and on Tuesday, he named Flowers the starting left guard, as if by default.

This announcement from Gruden is to be taken with a grain of salt. There are still 12 days left until the opening kickoff for the Redskins, so that marks 12 days left for Gruden and the coaching staff to change their minds. If Flowers is still at the top of the depth chart by then, you can take it to the bank. But until then, this remains an open competition, and nobody is doing much to win the job.
