Jay Gruden likes his developmental secondary, highlighted by Troy Apke

The younger elements of the Washington Redskins secondary continue to make good progress this offseason with Troy Apke getting some notable praise from his coaching staff.

Jay Gruden hasn’t been shy in handing out praise all over the place. But with the secondary, performances in OTAs have been visibly solid while they play against a pair of newcomers at quarterback.

“Apke is doing well. It’s been good to see him get a lot of these reps and work. Obviously last year he didn’t get a whole lot with his hamstring, so he’s progressing nicely,” Gruden said, according to Redskins.com. “Everett has also picked up the slack. He’s done a very good job. And Reaves, he made some big plays out there today. So those guys are taking advantage of their time.”

Apke is especially interesting because he brought immense physical traits to the table as a rookie last year but injuries held him back

Granted, Apke still doesn’t sound like a favorite to start alongside someone such as Landon Collins. But if he’s showing enough in the way of progression, he’s going to be hard to ignore.

As hinted though, the secondary better be looking good in June when facing a new arrival like Case Keenum, not to mention a rookie like Dwayne Haskins.
