Jay Gruden knows he’s in a no-win spot with QB situation

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden seems to know that no matter how he approaches the Dwayne Haskins situation, criticism will emerge.

Case in point, the team’s last game when he tossed Haskins into the fire — some saw it as a “finally!” moment, others saw it as too late. Some thought it was a good move for Haskins, others thought it hurt him.

“You can argue both sides of the coin right here,” Gruden said, according to Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post. “No matter what we do with him, we’re going to be wrong, so it doesn’t really matter.”

Indeed, the only real way Gruden can come out of this looking clean at this point is if he makes a decision under center, that passer plays well and the team wins.

Easier said than done. The foot injury that has held back Case Keenum is still floating around the position. Colt McCoy is still slowly making his way back and Haskins isn’t liable to instantly correct the problems that led to such a poor showing.

It’s an unfortunate reality for Gruden, who could suddenly be a transition coach with a rookie passer meant for the next guy. He’s trying to win now but based on the start, the comment rings true so far.
